Northernness Coffee— Our name comes from two of the great writers of history, JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis who became friends over this word, where they spent a lot of their time in pubs eating and drinking. They were captivated by what they called Northernness. To paraphrase—“The snowy wild North, Spruce trees, cold, windswept mountains, myth giving way to fact, brief, but powerful feelings of courage, nobility, and goodness—an almost painful desire for a place that was either imaginary—or unattainable but will one day be.” They believed certain songs and scents, works of literature, the beauty of things and nature herself, evoke in us something powerful that points to deep mysterious truths about the cosmos we all find ourselves in. So, we wanted a place and space that was beautiful and good, coupled with great food, music, people and art—a wayside inn for travelers, and our town, men and women, young and old alike and their kin, and to sit by a fire in the winter or in a beautiful tweed booth or around a lovely wooden table in the autumn——and find some good happy rest.
